Psalm 127:3-5: Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.

For many of us, as fall starts our schedules change.  Kids go back to school, the weather starts cooling off and daylight gets shorter.  Evenings become filled with homework, sports, band, etc. and the holidays come quickly.  Sometimes this is when you find out how close your family is and what kind of a relationship you have with your children.  Are your kids a blessing or not so much?

Building a family identity is a lifetime of creating memories and ties that bind us. It’s a gift that you can give your child that doesn’t cost anything but your attention. It’s the little things built up over years of purposeful love.

Learn to make each member of the family feel important by everyone participating in each other’s activities as a family, like watching a football game, going to a concert, having a favorite TV series you watch together. Some Santellan trademarks are road trips, singing in the car on the way to church, yelling “Estoy Casa” to the family when we arrive home. (That’s right, estoy.) Even now, long distance phone calls every afternoon from Philadelphia. We purposefully express our joy in each other. Saying these things out loud makes them more concrete and real. Teach them from the Bible as you live together. Be attentive to needs without blowing it out of proportion, not overemphasizing faults or making everything about the kids. Life doesn’t revolve around the children, although they take a lot of our focus. Teach them to sacrifice, to wait, and to give. Neglect will kill a spirit but over indulgence will teach them to be in control beyond their boundaries. Respect older people.

We all have made missteps in parenting, but how wonderful it is that we can continue growing in our relationships as parents and children.

So if your child is 1 year old or 60 years old, what kind of a relationship are you developing? God has a great plan for each of our families.

Hebrews 6:10: God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.

- George Santellan
